Is Your Skylight Leaking?

Water appearing near a skylight does not always mean the glass itself is leaking. The problem may come from aging seals, damaged or improperly installed flashing, deteriorated shingles, or water entering elsewhere on the roof and traveling toward the skylight opening.

Capstone Restoration inspects the skylight and the surrounding roofing system to identify the likely source before making an honest recommendation. If the skylight can be repaired, we will explain that option. If its age or condition makes replacement the more dependable choice, we will explain why.

Signs of a possible skylight problem:

  • Water stains or discoloration around the skylight
  • Dripping during or after rainfall
  • Moisture or condensation between the panes
  • Cracked, damaged, or deteriorated skylight components
  • Loose shingles or visible flashing problems

Skylight Repair or Replacement?

The right solution depends on where the water is entering and the condition of the skylight. Some leaks are caused by a repairable problem in the surrounding shingles or flashing. Older or failing skylights may be better candidates for replacement, especially when repeated sealing would only provide a temporary fix.

Our goal is to correct the source of the problem. We provide a straightforward assessment so homeowners can make an informed decision about their roof.

Skylight Repair May Be Appropriate When:

  • The skylight itself is still in good condition
  • The leak comes from a limited flashing or roofing issue
  • The nearby shingles can be repaired and properly integrated

Skylight Replacement May Be Appropriate When:

  • The skylight is old, damaged, or failing
  • The seals or glazing have deteriorated
  • Water intrusion continues despite previous repairs
  • A new skylight and flashing system offer the more reliable solution

VELUX Skylight Replacement in Lawrence, Indianapolis

A homeowner in Lawrence contacted Capstone Restoration because an older skylight was leaking and allowing water into the home. After diagnosing the problem, we scheduled a complete skylight replacement.

We removed the shingles surrounding the skylight and carefully removed the old unit. The roof surface was then prepared with ice-and-water shield around the opening before the new VELUX skylight was installed.

The new skylight included a solar-powered blind and a new VELUX flashing kit. We installed the flashing components and integrated Owens Corning Oakridge shingles in Driftwood through the flashing system to match the existing roof as closely as possible. This layered installation helps direct water around the skylight and back onto the roof surface.

Skylight Repair and Replacement FAQs

  • Can you replace a skylight without replacing the entire roof?

In many cases, yes. We can remove the shingles around the existing skylight, install the new skylight and flashing system, and integrate new shingles into the surrounding roof. The condition and age of the existing roofing materials will determine whether this is a practical option.

  • Why is skylight flashing important?

Flashing helps guide rainwater around the skylight and safely down the roof. It must work together with the underlayment and shingles. Missing, damaged, or poorly integrated flashing can allow water to enter around the roof opening.

  • Do you install VELUX skylights?

Yes. Capstone Restoration installs VELUX skylights and compatible flashing systems. Available features may include solar-powered blinds, depending on the selected skylight.

  • Can you match the shingles around a replacement skylight?

We make every reasonable effort to match the existing roof. Exact matches depend on the roof’s age, weathering, and whether the original shingle is still available. For the Lawrence project shown above, we installed Owens Corning Oakridge shingles in Driftwood to coordinate with the existing roof.

  • What areas do you serve?

Capstone Restoration provides skylight and roofing services throughout Fishers, Indianapolis, Lawrence, Noblesville, Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, and surrounding Central Indiana communities.
